A Little History

McDermott’s Castle stands on Castle Island in Lough Key, just outside the beautiful forest park near Boyle. Built by the McDermott clan — one of the great Connacht dynasties — the castle dates back to the 12th century and was a seat of power for centuries. It is also the setting of one of Ireland’s most poignant love stories: Una McDermott and Tomás Costello, whose tragic romance inspired the song Una Bhán, one of the most celebrated poems in the Irish language. Tomás is said to have swum to the island each night to be near Una, and when she died of a broken heart, he died shortly after and was buried beside her. The ruins of the castle still stand on the island today, watching over the lake that witnessed their story.
