Built by the McDermott clan — one of the great Connacht dynasties — the castle dates back to the 12th century and was a seat of power for centuries. It is also the setting of one of Ireland’s most poignant love stories: Una McDermott and Tomás Costello, whose tragic romance inspired the song \u003cem\u003eUna Bhán\u003c\/em\u003e, one of the most celebrated poems in the Irish language. Tomás is said to have swum to the island each night to be near Una, and when she died of a broken heart, he died shortly after and was buried beside her.
